Beast Of No Nations Wins 12 Awards At 2015 Ghana Movie Awards

Beast of No Nations actor picking up one of his two nods at the 2015 Ghana Movie Awards

As expected, Cary Joji Fukunaga’s critically acclaimed film, ‘Beasts Of No Nation’, grabbed most awards at the 2015 Ghana Movie Awards, which held at the Accra International Conference Centre,  last night December 30 2015.

'Beasts Of No Nation', shot by the Emmy award-winning film maker in Ghana and starring Idris Elba received 12 nods on the night including Best Picture, Best Directing and Best Cinematography. Idris Elba won the award for Best Supporting Actor while the movie’s breakthrough child star, Abraham Attah picked up the awards for Best Actor in a leading Role and Discovery Of the Year.

‘If Tomorrow Never Comes’ earned Yvonne Nelson the award for Best Actress In A Leading Role and Best Actress in Supporting Role for Rebecca ‘Becca’ Acheampong.  ‘Freetown’ also won Best Screenplay.

Highlights of the night

Highlights of the rather boring ceremony included Adjetey Annang's special cover of John Legend's smash hit, 'All Of Me' which ended with a dance competition between the actor and comedian Funnyface. Ghanaian international actress, Akosua Busia was also presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award. She announced the end to her 18-year break from acting, and revealed how organisers of the awards tricked her into believing she was only going to present the award for Best Picture on the night.

The Boycott

Several of Ghana's top actors and industry players including Yvonne Nelson, Yvonne Okoro, Prince David Osei, Juliet Ibrahim, and others boycotted the event, taking away a lot of lustre from the ceremony. Most of them boycotted the 2015 Ghana Movie Awards due disagreements regarding the multiple nomination of Beasts of No Nation, while others claim the awards were not credible.
