The winner of the 2015 Glo CAF Awards Footballer of the year will be announced at a ceremony in Abuja tonight, January 7.
Ghana’s Andre Ayew, Pierre-Emerick Aubemeyang, of Gabon and Ivory Coast’s Yaya Toure made the final cut from an initial 10-man shortlist in November, 2015.
Touré won the award for the fourth consecutive time last year, and makes his achievement a tall order for any player to walk in his shoes. If he wins the award this year, he will surpass Samuel Eto’o, who won the award four times (in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2010).
For many sports enthusiasts, Toure is a favourite to clinch the gong having already won the BBC African footballer of the year award not too long ago.
However, analysts like Super Eagles’ trainer, Sunday Oliseh has tipped Andre Ayew to win the award ahead of the duo, Yaya and Aubemeyang tonight.
Oliseh, seem tired of Yaya Toure winning a record fifth as he told The PUNCH, “I think Ayew deserves it to stop the monotony.”
In 2015, Ayew took the Africa Cup of Nations tournament by storm with the Black Stars and were only beaten in the final game of the tournament on penalties.
He scored 3 goals in the 6 appearances in the tournament and became the top scorer of the tourney. He returned to the French league and kept his scoring form as a midfielder which might have caught the eye of teams like Swansea who quickly pursued him. He scored 7 goals in 13 matches.
At the ongoing 2015/2016 premier league, Andre Ayew has scored 6 goals in as many as 20 games for Swansea City which is only half way through. He has won Swansea’s player of the month awards twice and is the club’s best performer so far.
With all these, one might be tempted to agree to Oliseh’s assertion, especially when the award is coming at the heels of a recent one given him by the Uganda FA; Best African Player in Europe at the
Ghana and Swansea City superstar Andre Ayew has been voted Africa's best player in Europe, at the 2015 Airtel FUFA Awards gala where he fended off competition from, Manchester City and Ivory Coast star Yaya Toure and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang of Gabon.
Oliseh is not the only admirer of Ayew’s qualities as Victor Ikpebah also tipped him to win the gong.
