We Can't Increase Salaries Of Workers - Labour Minister Replies Organised Labour

Employment and Labour Relations Minister, Haruna Iddrisu has maintained government's inability to effect an 50 percent wage increase as demanded by public sector workers following the increment in fuel prices and tax impositions.

Making known the stance of government, the labour and employment minister argued that the demand for the  increase in salaries was basically impossible.

The statement by the minister follows a barrage of meetings by pressure groups, Civil and Local Government Staff Association (CLOGSAG) , Organised Labour and also the Trades Union Congress (TUC) where resolutions ended in a stalemate. Meanwhile the minister has assured moves to engage the all labour groups on the petitions in order to see the best way forward.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) in December 2015, increased tariffs of electricity and water by 59.2 percent and 67.2 percent respectively with the 18 to 27 % increase in petroleum products - a move which has convulsed public workers to express disagreement saying the hikes had the probability of negatively affecting their standard of living.
