The Narcotic Control Board (NACOB) says radical intervention measures are required to bring the high rate of Indian hemp (wee) smoking and peddling under control.
The NACOB revealed on Wednesday that Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis in the Western Region leads in wee smoking and peddling in the country and are tailed by Brong-Ahafo and Volta regions in the illegal drug.
Mr Felix Sarfo, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Head of the NACOB, disclosed this when he was interacting with staff of the Ghana News Agency (GNA). He was on a courtesy call to the Brong-Ahafo Regional Office of the Agency in Sunyani with other officers of the board.
He bemoaned the way and manner people especially, the youth smoked and peddled the drug at open places, and called for intensive enforcement exercises to control the situation.
He revealed that his office intended to establish additional offices in the region at places like Goaso, Wenchi, Dormaa-Ahenkro, NKoranza and Wenchi who are noted for the cultivation of the herb.
Mr Sarfo expressed the Board’s willingness to collaborate with security agencies to step up measures in ensuring that perpetrators were arrested and prosecuted.
He hinted of his outfit’s intention to set up drug free youth clubs in selected Senior High and Junior High Schools as well as some communities in the region in collaboration with volunteers who would also be trained to carry out extensive public education on the effects of drug abuse.

The acting Brong-Ahafo Regional Manager of the GNA, Nana Osei Kyeretwie, thanked the Board for the visit and assured them of the Agency’s readiness to support the NCB in the cause of its duties.
