Local Miners Smuggle Gold To Togo, Ivory Coast In Order To Escape New Taxes

The Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners (GNASSM) has revealed the illegal smuggling of gold minerals to Togo and Ivory Coast following the introduction of a 10 on percent withholding tax on small-scale and artisinal miners in the country.

Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners, Francis Opoku in an interview with CitiFM in Accra has thus warned that several businesses are been transferred to neighboring countries as small scale miners express their incapacity to deal with the taxes.

Meanwhile, government has justified its motive behind the taxes stating that all earnings from the 10 percent tax is to compensate for losses the accrued through operations of small scale miners as a result of non-payment of royalties and other tax revenues.
