Ghana’s President, John Mahama and Norwegian Prime Minister, Erna Solberg will co-chair the group of SDG Advocates, which is under the auspices of the United Nations.
The UN has also appointed Barcelona and Argentina captain Lionel Messi and pop sensation Shakira who is also the wife of Barcelona defender, Gerard Pique.
The two stars and other prominent persons were appointed to assist in the campaign to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the appointment of a group of eminent persons to assist in the campaign to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that world leaders unanimously adopted last September.
They have a mandate to support the Secretary-General in his efforts to generate momentum and commitment to achieve the SDGs by 2030.
According to the world body, the newly named SDG Advocates will add powerful voices to spur action on the visionary and transformational sustainable development agenda. The 17 SDGs aim to end poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change, while leaving no one behind.
Banki-moon said: “The 17 Sustainable Development Goals are our shared vision of humanity and a social contract between the world’s leaders and the people.
“They are a to-do list for people and planet, and a blueprint for success.”
The group includes heads of state and government, business and political leaders and prominent academia, as well as artists who have shown outstanding leadership in their field.
