Deputy Minister for Power, John Jinapor says Thursday morning’s nationwide blackout was as a result of a systems collapse.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show the sector minister said he was currently at Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) where engineers were working to restore full power.
Meanwhile, he said power had been restored to about 80% of the affected areas.
Almost the whole of Ghana was plunged into darkness around 5: 30 am; the situation led to most people ranting on social channels like Facebook and Twitter.
Below are some tweets expressing displeasure and discomfort:
Systems collapse is usually caused "when a generator is lost suddenly or a new generator is being added to the main power stream. It also sometimes occurs when load increases or reduces suddenly for various reasons. General faults can also cause systems failure when power is being transmitted from source," an ECG representative explained.
