PURC Unveiled For Charging Ghanaians 10% More For Power

Investigations conducted have shown that contrary to claims that consumers of power pay a 59.2%, recent revelations indicate that the actual increment in tariffs was a whopping 69%.

Leaked documents has revealed that apart from the 59.2% increase, PURC directed the Electricity Company of Ghana, to charge an additional 10%, resulting in a cumulative hike of 69% beginning 1st January, 2016 - a development which has resulted in thousands of consumers spending more on power.

The letter, which got intercepted by StarrFmonline is reported to have been signed by the Executive Secretary of the PURC Samuel Sarpong who ordered that the said charges included a 5% increase approved by Parliament for a street light levy and another 5% billing for the national electrification charge.

In the meantime, Deputy Minister of Power, John Jinapor has revealed that about 333,902 prepaid metre subscribers who suffered wrongful deductions have been fully compensated by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).Explaining to Citi FM the development, John Jinapor expressed that the ECG credited back its customers an amount totaling 3 million cedis stating that the wrongful deductions were being rectified.
