A police officer was shot and killed by armed robbers suspected to be of Fulani descent on the Ejura /Hiawonwu road in the Sekyeredumasi municipality.
The officer, 30-year-old, Corporal Alexander Kyeremeh who is stationed at Bimbilla in the Northern Region, was travelling from Yeji to Kumasi when the incident occurred last Friday afternoon, around 1pm.
He was shot in the right rib by the armed robbers when he failed to comply with an order.
The Ejura District commander of Police, Superintendent Anthony Appiah who confirmed the incident to Graphic Online, said the deceased was on board a bus travelling from Yeji to Kumasi where they unfortunately bumped into the armed robbers who had earlier intercepted one bus travelling from Atebubu to Kumasi.
They were also stopped and ordered to surrender all the monies on them by the robbers numbering about three with a fourth one hiding in a bush nearby.
Supt Appiah said when the deceased was coming off the bus, he hid some of the money in his pants and was seen by the fourth robber who was hiding in the bush.
The action of the police officer, seem to have infuriated the said fourth robber who quickly came out of his hiding place, opened the deceased’s belt and took out the money from his trousers. He then shot him in the right rib making his intestines gush out.
Information was quickly relayed to the nearest police command who sent in their men. “We quickly moved in but then, they had fled the scene. We have combed the whole area including the surrounding villages but found no trace of them,” said Supt Appiah.
The Mampong scarp on the Ejura-Mampong road and its surrounding communities of Ejura and Agogo has been under the alarming scourge of armed robbery activities, destruction of properties, murder and rape by nomadic Fulani herdsmen who normally lay ambush in the surrounding forest and attack commuters.
In a matter of days, Fulani herdsman made headline news with reports of pockets of mayhem on innocent people, including the murder of a popular fetish priest in Agogo and a highway robbery.
Meanwhile, Corporal Kyeremeh is said to have died at the Ejura Government Hospital few minutes on arrival.
