The age-long fighting between the Andani Royal family and their rival Abudu faction in the Dagbon Chieftaincy rift is in imminent danger of blowing over, as both families threaten war.
The Andani Family has served notice of their readiness to engage the Abudu Family in yet another war over the latter’s notice to forcibly enter the Gbewaa Palace to perform the funeral rites of their late Regent, Naa Abdulai Mahamadu IV.
The Abudus said at the press conference on January 11 that the lack of commitment by President Mahama and the eminent chiefs to perform the funeral rites of the late chief at the palace is heightening tension among members of the family.
The family gave government and the Asantehene-led committee a deadline of January 26th to come clear on the issue. They claimed that the head of the king makers in Dagbon, the Kuga-Naa, was not properly en-skinned.
With just a day to the deadline, the Andani side has issued it readiness to fight the Abudu family. Addressing a press conference in Tamale on Saturday, January 23 the Andani family warned the Abudu family that they would be embarking on a suicide mission if they start a violent confrontation this time.
"We have come a long way from March 2002. This time the response of Andani Family would be swift, resolute and direct, and such a manner as to put permanent closure to the intransigent arrogance of these extremists of the Abudu Family not only in Yendi but throughout Dagbon," Galwei Tamalgh-Naa Mahamadu, spokesperson for the family said.
They debunked the claim that the Kuga-Naa was not properly enskinned. According to Spokesperson for the Andani family, Galwei Tamalgu-Naa Mahamadu, the late Naa Mahamadu Abdulai was not properly and legally installed as legend of Dagbon in line with Dagbon customs and traditions.
The King of Dagombas and the overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Yakubu Andani II was killed on March 27, 2002 when clashes broke out between the two feuding Gates of Dagbon Kingship, the Andanis and the Abudus.
The Andani family stated that it would not allow the performance of the funeral rite of the late Abudulai Mahamadu IV in the Gbewaa palace because he was deskinned in May 1974 upon a recommendation of a Committee of Enquiry by the government of NRC which found that his ascension to the office of Yaa-Naa was illegitimate and in flagrant violation of Dagbon traditions and custom. The family has also asked the security forces in Yendi to withdraw from the precincts of the Gbewaa Palace and dared the Abudu Family to carry out their threat.
