The Ashanti Region has recorded the death of six people from meningitis, regional health directorate has officially revealed.
According to the directorate, out of 17 cases reported over the past days, 9 tested positive of meningitis while 8 others tested negative stating that the recent deaths have nothing to do with the deadly strain of pneumococcal meningitis which is documented to have killed about 28 in the Brong-Ahafo region. So far, specific townships reported to have contracted the outbreak includes, Ahafo Ano South, Offinso municipal, Offinso north, Ejisu Juaben municipality, Adansi North, Afigya Kwabre, Ejura Sekodumasi, Adansi South and Kumasi.
The Ashanti Regional Health Director, Dr. Alexis Nang Beifugbah, in a press briefing has revealed that the disease in the Ashanti Region should not be described as an outbreak since health authorities have the disease under control.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) has offered to aid Ghana with the needed assistance to end the spread of the deadly bacteria causing disease.
