90% of sachet water is raw water – Stanley Martey

The Head of Communication at the Ghana Water Company, Stanley Martey, has categorically stated that about 90% of sachet water on the market have no added value.

According to the spokesperson for the Ghana Water Company only a few of the sachet water producers filter water they sell to the public.

“I’m wondering why people drink the sachet water. The conditions under which some of the companies operate are terrible,” he said in an interview on Citi FM Thursday.

Mr. Martey insisted “Ghanaians use sachet water not as a preference or not because it is better than the treated water from the Ghana Water Company  but because it is available.”

He also apologized to people  who live in the western part of Accra for the recent shortage of water supply in their tabs.Areas like Dansoman, Korle Bu, Latebiokoshie and surrounding areas have not had water supply for the past three days.

But Mr. Martey noted that the recent shortage is due to voltage surges at the Ghana Water Weija station.
