Utility Price Increase: Spio Garbrah fears NDC could lose 2016 elections

Minister of Trade and Industry, Ekow Spio Garbrah is raising concerns over the increase in utility tariffs describing the move as dangerous for the NDC government especially as elections draw closer.

Speaking to the media in the Volta Region, Ekow Spio Garbrah wondered why the regulatory bodies together with government introduced the tariffs during the beginning of the year, revealing that such a move had the highest possibility of ruining the chances of the NDC come the November 7th elections.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) in December 2015, increased electricity and water tariffs by 59.2% and 67.2% respectively. This was followed with an 18% to 27% increase in petroleum products which incensed the workers’s unions who say workers are being overburdened whiles salaries remain unchanged.
