Ghana is prepared for Zika Virus - Health Ministry reveals

The Ministry of Health has revealed its preparedness to clinically contain any ouktbreak of the Zika virus should it break in the country.

Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Victor Bampoe revealing government's preparedness against the virus stated much concerns need to be raised since the virus is spread through mosquito bites.

The Director General of the Ghana Health Service is issuing a circular to all health workers. It is of concern to us because it is primarily spread by mosquitoes, not the ones that spread malaria but another type which we also have in Ghana and because it was discovered in Africa, the mode of transmission is here and we are potentially at risk, he revealed.

A dozen cases of the viral infection have so far been recorded in the US with all patients believed to have been bitten by mosquitoes while abroad. Meanwhile Doctors together with the World Health Organization (WHO) have described the virus as “a pandemic in progress” and some are even advising women in affected countries to delay getting pregnant.
