40 percent of births not registered in Ghana

Acting Registrar of the Births and Death registry, John Yao Agbeko has revealed that about 35 to 40 percent of all new born babies in the country have not been captured in the country's birth row. 

Speaking on CitiFM about the development, John Yao Agbeko explained the development is putting negative pressure on the country's social amenities since government does not factor them into the national development plan.

In spite of the modest achievement we have made, we need to be mindful that every year between 35-40 percent of children born in our country go unregistered. For this unfortunate ones, the era of childhood as the period of grow, learn and develop ones capability to face the challenges of youth and adult life within a well-protected social and civic environment will be a mirage, he noted

The Acting Registrar has thus revealed that efforts are being put in place to address troubling development especially when calls for a National Identification System have been put out.
