- The recent murder of the MP for Abuakwa North has reignited calls by MPs for security for the 275 members and their families.
Ghana woke up Tuesday morning to the news of the murder of the Member of Parliament for the Abuakwa North constituency in the Eastern region.
Joseph Boakye Danquah was stabbed and killed in his bedroom by an unknown assailant at his Shiashie resident in Accra.
Initial police investigations indicate the killer entered the MP’s room via a window using a ladder. The police also told the media that five persons have been picked up for interrogation and assist the investigation.

In 2013, the then Chairman of the Parliament Accounts Committee, Albert Kan Dapaah, was attacked in Dansoman, a suburb in Accra
In the same year, Member of Parliament for the Akan Constituency in the Volta Region, Mr. Joseph Kwadwo Ofori, was also attacked by armed men at his Tema Community 18 residence in October.
In November 2014, District Chief Executive of Nkwanta South,Hon. Peter Kojo Kenyenso was shot dead whiles he was returning from work.
Nkwanta South MP, Gershon Gbediame, was on January 11, 2014, robbed of his two pads, six mobile phones, Ghc5000 and $7,500 as well as jewelry. His assailants robbed him at gunpoint at his Lashibi residence near Tema.
In July 2015, Kwasi Agyemang Gyan-Tutu, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Tain in the Brong-Ahafo Region, was also attacked by some highway robbers at Nsawam in the Eastern Region.
The attacks on our legislature has reignited calls for the provision of security protection for the 275 MPs. “We do not feel safe anymore. This is a wakeup call to us all,” an MP told yen.com.gh
