Tunisian player, Wahbi Khazri put Sunderland who are trying to stay out of the relegation ahead only three minutes into the game with a free-kick.
Sunderland got their win with the inspired assistance of their January signings.
Former Bordeaux player, Wahbi Khazri was brilliant as he got himself involved in most of Sunderland's best attacks, with five key passes which caused United defenders some headaches.
Anthony Martial levelled after Sunderland’s keeper, Vito Mannone’s failure to deal with a Juan Mata shot.
Another January entrant, former Lorient player, Lamine Kone put the Black Cats back in front with a header which was sent in by Khazri.
The ball deflected off David de Gea and looked like troubled Martial before painfully landing into the net.
Sunderland's win takes them to within one point of rivals Newcastle and now a relief to Sam Allardyce but his counterpart at Manchester United, Louis van Gaal who has been frustrated this week by media reports, that Jose Mourinho's representatives have been in touch with the club about their client replacing him, will have some nightmares in the few days to come.
Manchester United have earned fewer points this season than in any other Premier League campaign after 26 games, a tale too bad for the Reds; and so LVG must go!
