EC dismisses Abuakwa North April 5 by-election date

- The EC has denied media reports which seem to suggest that the commission will hold a by-election for the Abuakwa North constituency.

- The NPP MP for the Abuakwa North constituency was stabbed to death two weeks ago and the vacant seat has to be filled 30 days after the death of an MP.

- The EC’s Director of Public Affairs at the Commission, Christian Owusu Parry said the commission is yet to decide on a date for the by-election

The Director of Public Affairs at the Electoral Commission, Christian Owusu Parry has urged the public to ignore publications in sections of the media indicating the commission will hold a by-election for the Abuakwa North constituency on April 5, 2016.

According to Mr. Parry the EC is yet to take a decision on the Abuakwa North constituency. He described the reports as “baseless and fabricated”.

He opined that the EC will make public if a date for the by-election is set. “It would also be on the Commission's website,” he said in an interview with Myjoyonline.com.

The Electoral Commission is required by law to hold a by-election with 30 days after Parliament notifies it, and a vacancy duly declared.

The Abuakwa North Member of Parliament, Joseph Boakye Danquah Adu, was stabbed to death at his residence at Shiashie in Accra.
