- The PIPS team have arrested two police Constables at Tabora in Accra for extortion
- The police were on a patrolling surveillance on police officers
- The two attempted escaping when they saw the police
- The police retrieved money and some incriminating items when a search was conducted on them
Two police officers, Constables Faati Jacob Tinob and Musah Azumah have been arrested by a Police Intelligence and Professional Standards (PIPS) team at Tabora Junction, near Lapaz in Accra.
The two allegedly mounted an unauthorised police checkpoint and extorted money from drivers who plied the road.
One of the officers was seen in a police Inspector’s uniform despite he being a Constable when they were arrested.
The PIPS personnel while checking on police personnel on a monitoring and inspection duty at some selected snap checkpoints in Accra bumped into the duo at about 8pm last Thursday.
Superintendent of Police Cephas Arthur who briefed newsmen said the PIPS team became suspicious when Tinob and Azumah attempted to abandon the checkpoint on seeing the police vehicle.
Constable Tinob was thus arrested in his attempt to escape, while Azumah managed to escape on a parked motorbike close.

Mr Arthur said the PIPS team however, managed to lure Azumah back to the checkpoint and caused his arrest.
A search on them revealed GH¢155 on Tinob, while Azumah had GH¢832 and two walkie talkies on him.
Later in a search of their residence in compliance with the order of the IGP, Mr John Kudalor, the search team found one riot control armoured vest, four bullet-proof vests, two drivers’ licences, one police camouflage with an Inspector lanyard, a pair of military trousers, two military caps, two camouflage bags, one military shorts, among other items.
No incriminating item was found in Tinob’s room when it was searched.
Meanwhile Police investigations, established that Azumah, a Constable with service number 78572, had been posted to Akyem Apirade in the Eastern Region last year but sought permission from the unit commander there on an excuse to return to Accra to take a few of his belongings and also put his home in order.
He subsequently refused to return to his new post, in spite of attempts to get him to return.
His accomplice, Tinob, also a constable with the service number 48838, was attached to the Visibility Unit of the Patrol Department in Accra.
The two are currently on detention at the Nima Police Station.
