Hearts break Medeama jinx with 2-0 victory

A Hearts of Oak lineup

Ghana’s premier club, Hearts of Oak stormed the T & A Park of Medeama and broke the five-year jinx in their clashes in the elite competition.

It was a great start to life in the Ghana Premier League with following another impressive display to win 2-0 over the Mauves and Yellows on Sunday.

It was a tale of two halves as the Phobians were pushed into their defensive shelves and had to rely on the exploits of their captain Robin Gnagne, Bempah, Akrofi and goalkeeper Akurugu to thwart the efforts of the Medeama frontline men.

Malik Akowah should have scored when he was played on by Daniel Amoah in the second half but he messed up the opportunity.

Eric Kumi, Sam Yeboah and Mensah were a handful for the home side which made them recoil into their shelves from the onset of the second half.

Coach Kenichi brought on Cosmos Dauda and Foovi Aguidi for Richard Yamoah and Yeboah respectively and the changes seem to have worked to Hearts’ favour.

In the 77 minute, Dauda beat an opponent and raced with the ball into the deep-end of the 18-yard before sending a grounder to the far corner of the post to register his first goal for the club.

Ten minutes later, Eric Kumi made it 2-0 for Hearts as the nimble-footed player, beat an onrushing opponent and teasingly sent one to the blind side of goalkeeper Muntari Tagoe in post for Medeama.

Kumi had to pay dearly for his style of celebration of the goal which seem to have got the player on cloud nine. He took off his shirt in celebration of the goal and the referee had no option than to show him a yellow card which was a second bookable offence, having already been shown the yellow card.

The Phobians by this feat and the 1-0 conquest over New Edubiase in match day one of the Ghana League is a case of renaissance in their match towards the past glory.
