Another brave act by a driver who heeded to a distress call of a police man who had been robbed of GH¢7,700 by two persons who sped away on their motorbike has taken centre stage.
The two, Michael Diala, 43, and Godfred Nwaiwu, 22, both Nigerians tailed a policeman who had gone to withdraw money from a financial firm at Community one in Tema.
The policeman on his way from the bank bumped into a friend and engaged him in a conversation.
The two then approached the policeman who was deeply immersed in the chat and snatched an envelope containing the money from his blind side and quickly bolted away on their motorbike.
The robbers sped off on the motorbike, meandering their way through the heavy vehicular traffic.
The hapless policeman quickly raised an alarm which caught the driver’s attention. The driver who was in a private car, chased the robbers and knocked them down with his car.
Realizing that luck had eluded them, Nwaiwu one of the robbers scattered the money on the ground and took to his heels, but he was apprehended by an angry mob.
ASP Juliana Obeng, the PRO of the Tema Regional Police Command who confirmed this to newsmen said at about 1.30 p.m. on February 25, 2016, the said police man who is stationed at the Marine, Railways and Ports Department of the Tema Regional Police Command suffered the fate in the aborted robbery.
She said a total of GH¢6,340 was recovered from the suspects after the incident, while a spot search conducted on them revealed a knife on Nwaiwu.
According to her, but for the timely intervention of the policeman and the driver who knocked down the suspects, Nwaiwu and Diala would have been lynched by the angry mob who stood by.
However, they could not be prevented from setting the motorbike used for the operation ablaze.
The act is the second daring adventure in as many months, after a similar one on January 9, this year when a taxi driver exhibited sheer bravery by knocking down two armed robbers who were escaping on a motorbike after attacking a Koala Supermarket sales lady, leading to their arrest.
The taxi driver has since been rewarded with a house by the President, while the Koala Supermarket, where the lady works, and the Ghana Police rewarded him with a car each.
The two suspects have been remanded to appear before the Tema Circuit Court on March 17, 2016.
