Real Madrid beat AS Roma 2-0 in the reverse of the 1-16 tie at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday and qualified for the quarter finals on 4-0 aggregate victory.
The 10 times UEFA champions are currently 12 points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona, and disqualified from the Copa Del Rey.
They therefore came into this game with winning the Champions League as their only realistic chance of silverware this season.
Edin Dzeko and Mohamed Salah could have made it a long nite for the home side but wasted Roma’s chances.
The first half looked exciting but looked nervy for Real Madrid fans who expected their team to maul the Italians who they beat 2-0 in the first tie at Rome.
Their anxiety was understandable; Zinedine Zidane, their coach asked his supporters to stay off Cristiano Ronaldo. He came to the player’s defense by insisting that he is “not in favour” of selling Cristiano Ronaldo, despite fans turning on the club’s record goalscorer.
“I am the coach and I want him, he’s prepared and ready to play,” said Zidane, ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League game with AS Roma.
An unhappy Ronaldo criticized his team-mates after the team’s 1-0 defeat by Atletico Madrid on 27 February.

On the nite, the Portuguese forward calmed the nerves of his supporters by scoring his 40th goal of the season and sent Real Madrid to the Champions League quarter-finals.
In the 64 minute, Ronaldo connected with his right foot, an assist by Lucas Vázquez from close range to put his side 1-0 up.
Four minutes later, he was on hand to set up James Rodriguez for an angled finish following a swift counter attack.
Cristiano Ronaldo now has 13 goals in this season's Champions League.
German Bundesliga side, Wolfsburg also reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time after Andre Schurrle's solitary goal sealed a 4-2 aggregate win over Gent in Germany.
