Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, Ghana’s Sports Minister has revealed for the general public consumption, a conversation he had with Ghana’s captain, Asamoah Gyan in the days leading to the 2017 AFCON qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The new Sports Minister who had visited the Black Stars at their camp, told a Happy FM that the Shangai SIPG hit man who is currently Ghana’s all-time scorer at 48 goals, confided in him his commitment and willingness to play against Mozambique.

I had to console Gyan that all was not lost. He looked shattered when he told me that he regretted not playing the match against Mozambique. He knew would score and hit 50 goals for Ghana. He told me that he scored two goals for Liberty Professionals in his debut match for them at the same venue and knew he would repeat it. ”

The mercurial striker is two goals shy of hitting a 50 goal haul and believed he would have been on the score sheet in the said match but injury prevented him from attaining his personal goal.

Gyan picked up the injury during the team’s last training session on Wednesday morning at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Black Stars won the match 3-1 with goals coming from Frank Acheampong, John Boye and Jordan Ayew.

Kwasi Owusu of Bofoakwa fame, held the enviable record with 36 goals until he was dethroned by Gyan.

The Black Stars striker is the leading African scorer at the World Cup with six goals, having recorded a goal more than Roger Milla of Cameroun.
