- The GPL is currently without a headline sponsor after First Capital Plus Bank withdrew
The 2016 winner of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) will earn as prize money $30,000 which is a hundred percent increment of the amount received by last season’s champions.
According to Ashford Tettey-Oku, the chairman of the Premier League Board (PLB), the winner will be given the prize irrespective of the fact that the league has no sponsor.
Mr Oku confirmed the new package in an interview with Accra based Asempa FM.
He mentioned it that the League Board made a proposal to the GFA who have approved that the champions for the 2016 Ghana Premier League be given $30.000 (GH¢114,000).
“I think this is very marvelous, wonderful and the FA must be commended," an excited Tettey-Oku noted.
“Last year, the champions won GH¢ 50,000 when there was even a headline sponsor.
“But in the absence of a headline sponsor this season, the FA is prepared to pay 30.000 US dollars,” he said.
Meanwhile, the GFA insists talks are underway to get a new sponsor for the domestic competition.
The GPL is currently without a headline sponsor following the withdrawal of First Capital Plus Bank (now Capital Bank) who said they are “restructuring” and needed to opt out.
