Dr. Mensa Otabil is not a politician - J.A Kufuor

- Former President, J.A Kufuor has said that he believes Dr Mensa Otabil is not a politician, regardless of accusations that the pastor belongs to the NPP

-  According to him, Mensa Otabil  is a very great pragmatist who brings religion to bear on our day to day living

-  Mr Kufuor made the comments during the launch of the Strategic Power Solutions (SPS) solar panel manufacturing plant

- The solar modules of SPS are of all sizes of installation with products including micro/macro solar grid systems, and also supplies and installs off-grid and grid systems, photovoltaic systems and PV streetlights.

In recent times, Pastor Dr Mensa Otabil, Head Pastor of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), has been linked to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) because of some of his utterances.

Afrifa Yamoah Ponkoh, a former Municipal Chief Executive of Ejisu-Juaben Municipal Assembly recently Mensa Otabil of being a card bearing member of the NPP. However, former President, John Agyekum Kufuor believes the pastor is not a politician, but rather a pragmatist who likes to take about the realities of the day.

Mr Kufuor made the comments during the launch of the Strategic Power Solutions (SPS) solar panel manufacturing plant on Thursday. Mensa Otabil gave the keynote address, stressing that governments should provide the enabling environment for Ghanaians, especially the youth, to do business.

The former president said: “He is a man of God, of course, and ordinarily people would think a man like him would limit himself to only spiritual matters. But he is a very great pragmatist. He brings religion to bear on our day to day living so sometimes people tend to misunderstand him and suspect he is dabbling in politics. But that is not how I see it. The analysis he has just given will show that he has deliberated on the role of the private sector in the development of any nation - a matter, which judging by the 59 years of our independence, which not all governments have tended to appreciate.”

The launch was attended by several dignitaries and industry leaders, including the Akyempenhene, Oheneba Adusei Poku, who represented the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. SPS focuses on packaging solar solutions that will promote human development and human security while providing unlimited power and customized solutions to satisfy different segments of society.

The solar modules of SPS are of all sizes of installation with products including micro/macro solar grid systems, and also supplies and installs off-grid and grid systems, photovoltaic systems and PV streetlights. It currently generates 30MWp/year which is expected to be upgraded to 100MWp/year.

Chairman of SPS Dr. Francis Akuamoah-Boateng said his inspiration for the project was borne out of his desire to make a meaningful contribution to the growth of Ghana. “In my eyes,” he said, “success that does not impact my country and its citizens is no success at all”.

The company has through its innovation improved the lives of Ghanaians, especially rural dwellers through the installation of over 20,000 solar street lights in the northern region and across Ghana.

The CEO of SPS, Mr. Oheneba Boateng emphasised the need for “approaches towards the use of renewable, clean energy, at a time when Ghanaians are still looking for alternative, stable and affordable energy solutions to complement what is produced by the national grid; and especially in our part of the world where we are fortunate to have such resources in abundance”.

With current power talks globally and local challenges with the resource, Dr. Akuamoah- Boateng explained that the production and supply of alternative power sources and clean energy was one of the areas in which Ghanaians could take the future into their own hands, and called for support in that regard.
