Eight persons have drowned in the River Oti near the Saboba District of the Northern Region.

The drowned were said to be returning in a boat from a funeral in Jajab in Togo on Sunday night when the accident occurred, a report by TVnetwork.com said on Tuesday.

Seven bodies, including that of a pregnant woman, have so far been retrieved, while an intensive search is ongoing for the missing person, the report said.

All drowned were said to be from the Nankpeli-Chakosi town in the district.

The cause of the accident is not immediately clear.
