Finance Minister, Seth Terkper has taken over the responsibility of the Power Ministry following the resignation of the sector minister, Dr Kwabena Donkor, the Deputy Minister of Power John Jinapor has revealed.
In an interview with Citi FM in Accra, deputy power minister John Jinapor revealed that the Finance Minister has taken over from the sector minister until President Mahama replaces the vacant position.
"The Finance Minister has oversight responsibility over the power sector now and he has been very helpful. Some of the challenges we face too have to do with the financial structuring of the power system and he has been helping us in terms of the financial structuring of the entire power sector. He has been very good, he has been able to procure gas, crude and virtually paid Nigeria some amount of money for us to stay on course," he revealed.
Meanwhile The Ministry of Power has indicated that the country may fall back into another load shedding in the next two weeks as the expected load shedding may result from their decision to rest some hydro plants, which will reduce the power generation capacity.
“In the next few weeks, it is a tight situation for us and we can have some deficit. It is very likely we will have deficit… it’s likely. As tough as the decision may be, if it is the right decision, we won’t hesitate to take the right decision… I prefer to rest the dams and some of the turbines for the next two weeks than to risk running them for the next two weeks for whatever expediency and then have a major problem ahead. I think that we should also think long-term and so we will take the right decision. We wouldn’t compromise the integrity of the dam,” he reiterated.
