Temple fireworks explosion kills hundreds in India

More than a 100 persons are feared dead following an explosion and blaze by fireworks at a Hindu temple at Kerala in India.

Local media are reporting that the fireworks used to celebrate a local new year festival exploded about 22:15 GMT on Saturday which also saw building at the temple collapse causing several casualties with more than 200 severely injured.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has traveled to the scene, in the coastal town of Paravur describing the incident as "heart-rending and shocking beyond words."

Hundreds of people are arriving at the temple in search of relatives and friends while emergency teams use bulldozers to clear the area in search of survivors as many of the injured in critical condition are being treated at the government medical college in Thiruvananthapuram, the state capital.
