Drogba to sue Daily Mail over irresponsible journalism

Didier Drogba, the former Chelsea striker has threatened to sue the Daily Mail over allegations it has made about financial irregularities in the footballer’s charity foundation.

The former Chelsea striker has claimed that there is “no fraud, no corruption, no mismanagement, no lies [and] no improprierty” at the Didier Drogba Foundation after a report published on Wednesday by Daily Mail alleged that only 0.8 per cent of the £1.7million the charity has raised in the UK has been spent on good causes.

The report further alleges that a high-profile charity ball arranged by the charity in 2010 and attended by the likes of David Beckham, Pele and Roger Federer made a loss of over £70,000.

In a statement released on Drogba’s Instagram page, he denied the allegations made by the Mail, saying his attempts at sending legal letters and 67 pages worth of documents to  advise  the Daily Mail that their information was factually incorrect and libellous, they have decided to ignore the facts, hence the need for the suit.

Drogba noted in his release that the irresponsible Journalism by the Daily Mail will in the long run affect the lives of thousands of African children who need healthcare and education in his deprived country and other African country.

Drogba went on to defend an additional claim made by the Mail, who alleged that the Foundation had only built one of the five clinics it claimed to be investing in. Drogba went on to indicate that despite the suit, the attempt by Daily Mail to discourage him from his plans of helping the poor.

The Ex-Ivory Coast international Drogba footballer is currently plying his trade in Canada, where he plays for MLS franchise the Montreal Impact.
