President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated a water taxi and a new ferry for residents of Agordeke in the Afram Plains North District of the Eastern region.
The commissioning of the new ferry comes after the old ferry broke down 10 years ago. The new ferry makes it easier to re-connected to the Afram Plains area to Kpando-Torkor in the Volta region.
In his inauguration speech on Thursday, President Mahama said, government noted the negative effect the absence of the ferry brought to the people during the 2012 campaign hence the provision of the ferry and water taxi.
The president expressed optimism that the facilities would help reduce the disturbing news of boat accidents on the lake and further promised the residents of rehabilitation works on the Donkorkrom to Agordeke road.
Agordeke was noted as one of the busiest commercial communities in the district in terms of fishing till the Pantoon broke down. The ten years absence of the ferry negatively impacted on both transportation and the local economy since market activities were affected.
Residents in the area expressed gratitude to the President for the facilities provided.
