79 sex workers test positive to HIV in voluntary test

Mrs Irene Sowerteh, the Programme Manager of the Hope for Future Generations (HFFG), a health-centered NGO, has announced at a meeting of peer educators in Sunyani, Brong Ahafo Region that 79 sex workers have tested positive to a voluntary counseling and testing session.

They were among a total 1,404 female sex workers between 13 and 23 years in Berekum, Drobo and Sampa who presented themselves for the voluntary test conducted by the HFFG.

Mrs Sowarteh lamented over the fact that HIV/AIDS was still on the rise in spite of the fact that advocacy for behavioural change was active.

She therefore called for intensified public education, especially in rural areas, to minimise the spread of the disease whilst advising the young who could not control their sexual desires to avoid unprotected sex and ensure the use of condoms at all times.
