Otumfuo Osei Tutu II marks 17 years on the throne

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II marked 17 years of ascending the Ashanti stool as the king  and overload of the Ashanti Kingdom.

The event which kicked start series of activities to celebrate the king began yesterday with a special ‘Akwasidae’ festival. The Akwasidae festival is celebrated every 42 days.

The Manhyia Palace, home of the Asantehene hosted key personalities from Ghana’s political, chieftaincy and other corporate entities.

President John Mahama and some government appointees also attended the event. Foreign Affairs Minister, Hanna Tetteh shared on Twitter handle some photos from the event.

The Akwasidae festival is also used to showcase the rich cutural heritage and history of the Ashanti Kingdom.

As the youngest son of the Asantehemaa Nana Afua Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II succeeded his late brother Otumfuo Opoku Ware II.

The current Asantehene is privately known as Barima Kwaku Duah.
