The Electoral Commission’s limited voter registration has been chaotic in the Brong Ahafo and Ashanti regions, it has been reported.
Claims of attacks on NPP officials at polling centers by NDC members in the Ashanti region have been made, a report by myjoyoline.com said on Tuesday.
The NPP’s head of security and intelligence in the Ashanti Region, Lt Col. (rtd) Ababio Serebuo, says the party would retaliate if the attacks continue.
“We are prepared to resist the oppressor’s rule. NPP can never be intimidated. We cannot predict and guarantee the ramifications of these extreme provocations,” the report quoted him as saying.
The chaos that has characterised voting in the region has already led to the vandalisation of biometric voter registration equipment at a registration centre in the Asokwa Sub-metro, which has drawn condemnation from the EC.
“Such acts of lawlessness perpetrated by individuals whose sole motive is to disrupt the ongoing registration exercise cannot be countenanced, the EC said in a statement, signed by Mr Amadu Sulley, the Deputy Chairman, in Charge of Operations, and copied to Ghana News Agency, in Accra.
The Brong Ahafo region has also recorded pockets of violence at centers over allegations of minors and foreign nationals being bused to register as first time voters, the report added.
