Bawumia tells EC to compile new voters' register

Mahamudu Bawumia, running mate to Nana Akufo-Addo, the flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has asked the Electoral Commission (EC) to immediately implement the Supreme Court’s ruling on the voters’ register.

Speaking to students of the Accra Polytechnic in Accra, Dr Bawumia said the court’s ruling vindicated the NPP’s position that the voters register was not credible.

“We have said this for a long time so we expect the Electoral Commission to very quickly and immediately put together modalities for addressing this issue and removing the names of all the categories specified by the Supreme Court,” he said.

He added that to ensure that the process was efficient, a new register may have to be compiled by the EC.

Dr Bawumia’s comments come after the Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that EC should expunge from the current register the names of persons who registered using the National Health Insurance Scheme card as a proof of identity.

It also asked the commission to re-register such persons using the right procedure.
