The chief executive officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, has ordered the suspension of work on the Makola shopping mall in Accra, it has been reported.
It comes after a trader was killed last week by a metal that fell on her from the construction site of the mall, according to a report by TV3network.
Dr Vanderpuije told journalists on Monday that he had ordered the suspension of work on the project to bring it in compliance with safety standards to ensure that further lives are not lost.
“Until we are satisfied that the contractor and all others involved are ensuring safety for the public, we will not resume work on the site,” he said.
Akweley, a tomato seller believed to be in her thirties, was seated by the fence of the construction site when the metal fell on her.

An eyewitness said three workers working at top of the building dropped the metal that had outweighed them, falling straight on the women’s head.
Akweley, a single mother of two with an eight-month old baby and a six-year-old child, is said to have bled in the nose and died before she could be transported to the hospital.
