Ursula Owusu says parliamentarians die from debts

Member of parliament for the Ablekuma West Constituency in the Greater Accra region Ursula Owusu Ekuful has revealed that the cause of death among some legislators has to do with debts they incured during campaigning periods.

“... many of the MPs who lost their seats came there hoping to get some ex–gratia were confronted with the fact that they had debts and were even indebted to the state after deduction from whatever was due them from their ex-gratia, some collapsed and some died," Mrs. Ekuful said revealed in an interview with Starr FM in Accra.

The NPP law maker has thus called for the best of systems that ensures the financial upkeep of incumbent parliamentarians. Her comments follows calls by parliamentarians for the increase of salaries and allowances as they argue that the upkeep of their constituencies demand a firm financial muscle.
