MUSIGA said in a statement signed by its president, Bice Osei Kuffuor, that profane songs were not good for public consumption, especially as the songs were played without any edits on radio and given wide currency on social media.

“As much as the Union appreciates the creative liberties of song writers to freely express themselves, it is essential that artistes appreciate the impact of their songs on the public especially in an era where technology has made it relatively easier for songs to be heard.

“MUSIGA is therefore urging all musicians to be mindful of the need to provide inspiring and positive lyrics in our songs. In the same breadth, we are also calling on radio and television station operators to be mindful of their role as gatekeepers of society and be circumspect in what they play on air,” the statement said.

MUSIGA’s call did not sit well with Shatta Wale, who took to Facebook on Thursday morning to blast the union.

The dancehall star, who is one of the biggest vendors of profane music, said MUSIGA should focus on improving the welfare of musicians, instead of discouraging the production of profane songs.

Eliminating profane lyrics, he said, would limit the creativity of artistes.

He said many musicians could not make ends meet, yet MUSIGSA had not thought of making them see music as a business venture, adding that the MUSIGA president and his team must sit up.

In a second Facebook post, Shatta Wale heaped praises on highlife great, Daddy Lumba, who is also known to produce profane songs.
