Social media on Sunday went agog with information about the arrest of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Central Regional Chairman at Heathrow Airport. The messages circulating mainly on WhatsApp indicated that Allotey Jacobs was caught carrying about 500,000 pounds.

However the UK High Commissioner has responded to the allegations, stating emphatically that the reports are untrue. Mr Benjamin spent hours on social media trying to explain the issue to curious Ghanaians.

In one tweet, a the apparently frustrated diplomate said: “This is tiresome. He was NOT 'picked up' by any UK authorities. That claim is NOT true. Clear now?,”

He told another person that: “There was no arrest...no, the story is NOT true. Mr Allotey Jacobs transited Heathrow this morning without incident. "
