A 20-year-old man who stripped naked and entered a lion enclosure in a Chilean zoo has survived the incident, but the lions were killed.
The young man broke into the enclosure, took off his clothes and jumped into the middle, horrifying other visitors who witnessed the attack, according to a report by the Daily Mail.
Once inside, the lions reportedly immediately pounced on him and began to 'play' with him.
Two African lions are said to have severely mauled the man who was later identified as Franco Luis Ferrada Roman.
The situation compelled the zookeepers to intervene in the attack and shoot the two lions in order to save his life.
He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and was said to be in grave condition, according to the report.
A suicide note was said to have been discovered in the man's pocket.
The report quoted the director of the zoo, Alejandra Montalva, as saying that she was 'deeply affected' by the deaths of the two lions, a male and a female.
She said the zoo had an established protocol because people's lives were very important to them.
She added that the zoo resorted to shooting the lions because there were no fast-acting tranquilisers available to stop them from mauling the man.
