Keta farmers protest against high ECG tariffs

Vegetable farmers in the Keta municipality of the Volta Region, who rely on electricity to power their irrigation pumps have embarked upon a demonstration against increasing electricity tariffs.

According to the farmers, who were seen clad in red bands and bore placards, there is a direct effect of the high tariffs on their farm produce and felt the government’s failure to redeem a promise made in 2012 to put farmers on a special tariff, instead of the current Non-Residential Tariff was deliberate.

Roland Tudzi, the chairman of the Keta Municipality Vegetable Farmers and Marketers Association, said several failed attempts including several letters to president Mahama to draw the attention of stakeholders to their plight has failed.

He said the situation got worse daily as high electricity bills kept piling on their produce.
