The chief and people of Akyem Anamaase, a farming community in the Eastern Region, have performed rituals which they say are meant to appease the river deity there.
It comes after a fetish priest in the community reportedly claimed that the god of the Appam River was angry at youth of the community for having sex around the river and also defecating in it.
The priest is reported to have said that the deity would kill all able-bodied men and women in the village if rituals were not done to appease it.
The situation compelled the chief of Akyem Anamaase, Nana Gwamina Akenten II, to lead a delegation to perform the rituals at the river.
They also presented a white cow and two bottles of schnapps, which the chief said had been demanded by the river deity, so that they could preserve their lives.
The chief is said to have stated that, going forward, measures would be employed to prevent residents in the community from defiling the river.
