A grandma is a stately and upright elderly lady, right? Especially if she is the ancestor of the Lord Jesus Christ mentioned in His genealogy. There are 7 women mentioned there, and they all are women of faith, but… some of their biographies are shocking!
Let’s get their names and short bios. These ladies surely have a lesson or two to teach us!
Apostle Peter sets her as an example for all the women of faith. She was the Abraham’s wife and the mother of the son of promise Isaac. (Genesis 17:15)
But she was the one who laughed when she heard God promise her a son! She was the one who gave her slave girl to Abraham to have sex with and stumbled him in his faith!
Sarah’s life lesson: it is never too late to repent and get things fixed!
She was the God-chosen wife for Isaac! She followed a stranger to a strange country by faith to marry a man she never met! But she also prayed for her babies and then complained about them when God has granted her the desired pregnancy! (Genesis 25:21) She loved one son much more than the other and deceived her own husband to get what she wanted for him.
Rebecca life lesson: nothing is perfect in this world, only faith attains perfection!
This was a godly woman, and she prayed a lot about her family. She also received many answers from God, but she was unloved by her husband. Her father cheated and got her off his hands as fast as he could. (Genesis 29:16)
Leah life lesson: she was fruitful despite her misfortune and did what is right despite the poor start in life.
This woman got rightfully married to her husband. What happened next is extraordinary. He died, she got remarried to his brother, he also died! She was a black widow! (Genesis 38:6) Her father in law refused to give his next son to her. What did she do? Had sex with her father in law, got pregnant and delivered two sons! What a woman!
Tamar’s life lesson: only God can fix things that went wrong in your life!
Our number 5 was a whore! She had her own bawdy-house and sold her body and sexual pleasures for money. And this woman is listed as one of the grandmothers of Jesus Christ! But she had the only thing God deems worthy of praise in humans – her faith!
Rahab’s life lesson: live by faith, not by sight!
She was a Moabite, a heathen and banned from being a part of Israel forever. (Book of Ruth) But she was also loving, loyal and stubborn enough to make her way into the Kingdom of God. She was the grandmother of King David and entered genealogy of Christ.
Ruth’s life lesson: Your background and your past do not determine who you are, but your faith does!
She was the unfaithful wife and cheated on her husband with King David (2 Samuel 11). Her husband got killed, and the king got punished by God; her child died. But still she became the mother of King Solomon and the queen of Israel!
Bathsheba’s life lesson: forgiveness and mercy of God are incredible, and there is never too late to repent and be blessed by Him in Jesus Christ.
All these women were imperfect and even sinful. God Himself has chosen them to be in the linage of His Holy Son Jesus. Why? Just because Jesus came to redeem us from our sins and save the things that have perished!
