NDC turns 24 years today

President Mahama will today join party faithful of his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in marking the 24th anniversary of the party.

The party was founded by the former President, Flt Lt. Jerry John Rawlings on June 10, 1992. NDC which subscribes to the ideology of Social Democracy has been in power for close to 16 years out of the 24 years of the fourth republic producing three presidents in the process namely Founder Flt Lt. Jerry Rawlings, Late President Atta Mills and President Mahama.

The event which would be held at the party headquarters is expected to attract top functionaries of the party as well as grass root supporters of the party. NDC was founded by Jerry John Rawlings who was head of state of Ghana from 1981 to 1993 and the President of Ghana from 1993 to 2001.

The party was formed ahead of elections in 1992 and in 1996, returned Rawlings to power. Rawlings’ second term ended in 2001. The NDC lost the presidency in the 2000 election and it was not until the 2008 that it regained it with candidate John Atta Mills. The NDC’s party symbol is an umbrella with an eagle’s head on top. Party colors are red, white, green and black.
