Eric Akoto wins damages over narcotic claims

Austrian biggest newspaper Kronen Zeitung has been ordered by an Austrian High Court in Vienna to pay "substantial" undisclosed damages to Ghana-born ex-Togolese defender Eric Akoto after making false publication against him over drugs two years ago.

The newspaper who has agreed to pay the undisclosed amount apologised to the former Togo defender who launched libel proceedings against them for claiming he was engaged in narcotic drugs dealings.

In an apparent case of finding himself at a wrong place, the 36-year-old was mistakenly arrested in 2014 with other Africans after a police swoop but was immediately released when it emerged he was innocent of the crime.

Akoto moved from Ghanaian club Liberty Professionals and joined Austria Wien in 1998 from where he subsequently switched nationality to play for the Hawks of Togo at the 2006 World Cup.
