Gov't releases GHC37 million research allowance to lecturers

To avert strike action by university lecturers in the next academic term, the Ministry of Finance has released GHC37 million as research allowance to university teachers.

A deputy education minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, revealed this at the inauguration of a GHC673,649 TEK Television Station at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

He said KNUST would receive the highest amount of GHC6.53 million, according to a report by the Daily Graphic.

Mr Ablakwa presented a copy of the release letter from the Ministry of Finance to the outgoing vice-chancellor of KNUST, Prof. William Otoo-Ellis.

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) had threatened to embark on another strike if government failed to pay their book and research allowance.

The association said several assurances given by government to pay the allowances had not yielded positive results.
