UN warns Ghana against ban on social media

The special representative of the United Nations secretary general for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWA), Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, has maintained that the UN would not endorse any attempts to ban social media in Ghana during elections.

"The Ghana Police Service had indicated it was considering the shutdown of social media services in the country on November 7, the day of the general elections, since in their view, the abuse of social media platforms often creates unnecessary tension in the country," Dr Chambas stated.
