The Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) has revealed that 1,300 girls in Ghana were defiled in 2014.
According to the report recorded cases of rape also increased from 290 in 2012 to 342 in 2014. The report further indicated that 19% of Ghanaian women aged between 15-49 has experienced some form of sexual violence.
Defilement accounted for 66% of all sexual offences reported to DOVVSU.
Yaw Acheampong, a member of the NGO Hope for the Future has urged government to ensure women are protected against all forms of sexual violence.
