An investigative report by Daily Guide shows that President John Dramani Mahama requested for a pistol and subsequently applied for a licence from the arms and ammunition Unit of the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
So far, the reason for the acquisition of this pistol remains unknown but suspicions are that the president fears for his personal safety as the country heads for the November 7 elections.
A supposed letter written and signed by the deputy interior minister, James Agalga which was addressed to the director of police CID dated August 27, 2015 and headlined: ‘Permission to import and license a pistol' reads:
“Permission is hereby granted to H.E John Dramani Mahama to import and license one pistol and two hundred (200) rounds of ammunition,” he stated.
The purpose, he noted, “is to request you to issue H.E John Dramani Mahama with a permit to import and license the items.”
The report by Daily Guide further shows that the presidency had refused to comment on the development as all means to get in touch with the defense ministry has proved futile.
