Dr Edward Mahama, the flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), has stated that he loves homosexuals although he is opposed to their lifestyle.
Homosexuality is illegal in Ghana and homosexuals face discrimination from some members of the public.
But Dr Mahama, a medical practitioner, says homosexuals have rights and must not be despised and discriminated against by the public.
He was speaking at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA)’s evening encounter with presidential candidates on Tuesday.
He said as a christian, he was required to love his neighbour as himself and that love covered homosexuals too.
Dr Mahama said his close friend had a homosexual son whom he (Mahama) loved although he felt the boy was doing the wrong thing.
He said in his profession, he stresses to lesbians and gays who consult him that homosexuality is not a healthy sexual practice.
“What I am saying is that it’s their right to do what they like with their body but I don’t endorse it and I think it’s wrong which is why I educate them. And that’s all I can do because I am not going to think for somebody,” he added.
Dr Mahama is making his fifth attempt at the presidency in November.
