The Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) has ranked the Volta Region as the leader in marijuana ("wee") cultivation and usage in the country.
It said many youth in the region were engaged in marijuana cultivation because there was a ready market for it, according to a report by 3fm.com.
The report quoted Mr Jeremiah Joel Ghartey of the NACOB educational unit as saying that the organisation had abandoned a policy of constant arrests in favour of sensitising people to the danger of marijuana use.
“When people are informed, we expect that they will be able to make informed choices that will not lead them into trouble,” he was quoted as saying.
Mr Ghartey added that NACOB was building its capacity to be able to match the sophisticated techniques that drug traffickers and users apply in evading arrest.
